MOTOR RACING EXCITEMENT IN MUNGER
MUNGER, MICHIGAN - A unique motorsports event will be staged Friday September 14th and Saturday, September 15, 2007. Some are calling it “CRAZY 8 WEEKEND” The site will be the Festival Grounds in Munger.
On Friday the 14th Munger will host the USA Front Wheel Figure 8 Championship. This is a first for us. Last year the event was held at the Ingham County Fair Grounds in Lansing. Sonny Hall the promoter for the event approached the Firemen Corporation and asked us to host the event knowing we have one of the best tracks in the State of Michigan. For 15 years we have been hosting the Annual Season Championship Figure 8 Derby for rear wheel drive cars. A field of 50 daredevil drivers will have been prequalified from season long competition at a variety of locations in Michigan and will be competing for $5000.00 Friday and $10,000.00 Saturday in purse money.
Local event manager, Don Smrecak, brings an excellent sponsorship program and a great facility to our sport, notes Elwood "Sonny" Hall, President of USA Demolition Derby and Figure 8 Derbies. The Munger Volunteer Firemen Corp. sponsor the event.
"Our drivers will have competed on a series of fairgrounds and festival tracks all season long and Munger should offer the best facilities we've seen all year", said Hall. The Munger course is spacious and bordered by steel guardrails set in concrete. There is ample free parking and seating for over 4,000 spectators.
The Figure 8 Derby is a unique blend of Figure 8 racing and the time tested Demolition Derby format. Hall, a 32-year veteran Demo Derby promoter, is the pioneer in the Figure 8 Derby field.
This type of competition blends the thrill of two potential intersection crashes per lap and the motorized mayhem of an all out derby.
Prequalified Figure-Eighters will come from Farwell, Howell, Midland, Ypsilanti, Big Rapids, Charlotte, Flint, and the Upper Peninsula.
Strong fan identification will accompany the event. Drivers wheel nearly stock automobiles into seemingly impossible situations. Fans often stay on their feet, screaming, throughout an entire USA Figure 8 Derby. Luck, skill and automotive durability will all play an important role in determining a Season Champion in Munger.
Admission on Friday is $10.00 for adults and children under 12 $5.00. Saturday admission is $15.00 for adults and children under 12 $5.00. Gates open at 5pm Friday and 4:30 pm Saturday. Advanced ticket sales are available at B & D Party Store and John’s Bar in Munger.
Competition is scheduled for 7:30 PM on Friday and 6:30 PM Saturday. Other events scheduled are food, refreshments and music until midnight at the Merritt Township Hall in Munger.
